Here we go…

1.  Scandal (part I) - Damn this show gets better and better!  I watched last Thursday’s episode and it kept my heart rate way above normal the entire time.  The music lends itself to the suspense and watching Quinn and James getting closer to the connected mysteries was adrenaline pumping and to end with Fitz getting shot.  WOW.  I am assuming that Ms. Rhimes wants us to think that Mellie had a hand in the shooting with her “let’s just go home” bit, but I am also going to assume that this is a red herring.  Agreed?  If you watched last night’s episode, then the color red is significant too…

2.  Cross-Network References – Is it just me, or is it a little weird that two shows in one night referenced the same small town in Ohio?  Now, I didn’t watch Scandal or Glee at it’s proper time, but it struck me as weird.  I get that Defiance is a cool name to use and it’s a total coincidence, but did anyone else find that funny?  Also, TV Watcher pointed out that H50 and Revolution used the same phrase “coming back like a bad penny”.  So strange.  Oh, and one other weird Scandal/Glee coincidence, how common a name is Quinn that both shows use the name for a central character.  I know Glee‘s Quinn has been around for a while, but it’s still weird.

3.  Scandal (part II) – I only have one word to say after last night’s episode.  WHOA!!!!!  or WTF?!?!?!

4.  Glee – A few things that I wanted to point out after last week’s Thanksgiving episode.  First, what is it about running New Directions that necessitates wearing vests and grandpa sweaters.  Seriously, Finn is 18, don’t dress him like he’s 80.  Also, did the scene with SJP coming out of the subway in Bushwick, telling Kurt about her experience remind anyone else of the scene from Sex and the City (the movie) when Carrie takes the subway down to the LES to see Miranda on New Year’s?

Okay now, take a break from Frosty, Rudolph and all that tinsel and Christmas music and dig into some potato latkes, jelly doughnuts and chocolate coins.  Light some candles, spin some dreidels and open some presents and give thanks that Adam Sandler decided not to write a new Chanukah song this year.   Have a happy happy happy happy Hanukkah!

1.  TV Tonight!  Maybe I’ll nerd out with VGA 10 or Fringe or Science’s new show, Life in Hell, or Haven‘s finale.  Its a nerd paradise!

• CBS is all new with Undercover Boss at 8 followed by CSI: NY at 9 and Blue Bloods at 10.
• NBC has a compilation of SNL Christmas skits from 8-10 and then new Dateline NBC at 10.
• Fox has new Kitchen Nightmares at 8 followed by Fringe at 9.
• ABC has new Last Man Standing at 8, Malibu Country at 8:30 and the new 20/20 at 10.
• The CW has Nikita at 8.
• On cable, Spike TV has VGA 10 (Samuel L. Jackson hosts the tenth anniversary of the Video Game Awards) from 9-11; Haven has its mid-season finale at 10; and Science has 4 new episodes of the series, Life in Hell from 9-11.

2.  CBS Mid-Season Schedule. Hot on the heels of ABC’s announcement earlier this week, yesterday, the Eye announced its mid-season programming changes.  Rules of Engagement will be dusted off for a new 7th season and placed into the Partners void on Mondays at 8:30. New cop drama, Golden Boy, will premiere for 2 weeks (February 26 and March 5) on Tuesdays at 10 (Vegas‘ current slot) and then move to its permanent home on Fridays at 9 (after CSI: NY has finaled). Vegas returns on March 12 while  Survivor returns February 13 and The Amazing Race returns February 17.

3.  Show and Casting News! I was skeptical when I first heard but as I’ve digested, I am becoming excited over USA’s new sci-fi pickup, Horizon.  The show will be set during WWII and work the “pending alien invasion” theme.  Not to be outdone by ABC’s Celebrity Diving premiering in March, Fox announced that Stars in Danger: The High Dive will premiere in January and feature its own celebrities learning to dive like an Olympian.

2.  Show and Casting News.  As we reported last night on Twitter (follow us, @OnMyDVR), Bravo has greenlit its first two scripted dramas, The Joneses and Rita.   From Bravo’s press release:

“The Joneses,” from Life Unexpected creator Liz Tigelaar, is a remake of the 2009 Demi Moore and David Duchovny indie drama of the same name. “The Joneses” follows a seemingly perfect family of four that has just moved to an upscale suburb to start a new life, but have a secret they must keep from friends and neighbors… they aren’t a real family at all.

“Rita,” is an adaptation of the Danish format of the same name. This edgy, humorous and acerbic family drama follows an outspoken private school teacher who struggles to raise her own three teenage children while dealing with the inane bureaucracy and overprotective parents at her school. Produced by Fox Television Studios, “Rita” is written and executive produced by Krista Vernoff (Shameless, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Wonderfalls) with Mikkel Bondesen (Burn Notice, The Killing) and Henrik Bastin serving as executive producers for Fuse Entertainment 2.0.

5.  Celebrate the Holidays (and Possible End of Days) with SyFy! 

NEW YORK – December 5, 2012 – Syfy will close out 2012 with a holiday programming festival featuring an End of the World movie marathon – in case the Mayan apocalyptic prediction proves false – along with a Star Trek film extravaganza, the Doctor Who spinoff K-9 and, of course, the annual Twilight Zone New Year’s Eve journey into the Fifth Dimension.

The holiday festivities kick off on Thursday, December 20 at 8PM with the End of the World festival, concluding Friday, December 21 at 3AM, highlighted by the Thursday night specials Countdown to Doomsday (12AM) and 2012: Startling New Secrets (2AM).

The continuing adventures of the Starship Enterprise journeys from 10:30AM-2AM on Saturday, December 22, and 11AM-11:30PM on Sunday, December 23.

Making its U.S. television premiere, K-9, a comedy/adventure series focusing on the adventures of the robot dog K-9 from the iconic series Doctor Who, blending computer animation and live action, airs on Christmas Day Tuesday, December 25 from 10AM-11PM, with a marathon of all episodes in the series.

The Twilight Zone annual New Year’s holiday marathon ushers in 2013 Monday, December 31 from 8AM-4:30AM, and on Tuesday, January 1 from 6AM-5AM.

2.  On Others Bones We Feast (and ABC’s Other Bone-Headed Mid-Season Moves).

• We saw a smattering of new shows jumping into the timeslots of (not so) dearly departed shows, including (i) Cult on The CW, which will take Emily Owens, M.D.‘s timeslot of Tuesdays at 9, beginning on February 19; (ii) Red Widow (think Missing from last season) on ABC which will take 666 Park Avenue’s 10 pm, Sunday night slot, starting on March 3 (two hour premiere from 9-11 and regular timeslot premiering on March 10); and (iii) Zero Hour (with Anthony Edwards, Hooray!) taking over Last Resort‘s Thursday night, 8 pm slot (why do they think another high octane drama will work here?!?).
• In addition, ABC released its full mid-season schedule updates and we have (i) How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life) (starring Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond)) premiering Wednesday, April 3 at 9:30; (ii)  Family Tools (“family comedy that proves mixing family with business is never easy”) premiering Wednesday, May 1 at 8:30; (iii) The Taste (“New innovative cooking competition show” starring Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre and Brian Malarkey) premieres Tuesday, January 22 from 8:00-10:00 pm and settles into its regular 8 pm timeslot on January 29; and (iv) Celebrity Diving (Greg Louganis!) premieres  Tuesday, March 19 at 8 pm.

3.  Casting and Show News. Besides new show timeslot moves, we also saw some interesting casting news, such as, Michael Richards (Seinfeld) returning to TV in the pilot of Kirstie Alley’s new TV Land pilot, Giant Baby.  Richards came under fire a few years ago after a stand up routine where he unleashed some unwelcome racial epithets. Apparently, Seinfeld being the funniest comedy ever carries some weight?  Also, B.J. Novak (The Office) will guest star in a couple of episodes of The Mindy Project; a surprise move to no one.

4.  Justified Promo. Though, the ad that precedes this video is also pretty awesome so watch that too. Justified returns for Season 4 on January 8 (on FX).

A plethora of NBC news with Nick Lachey signing on to host a reality singing competition, The Winner Is (Working Title); S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order) will recur on Deception; Howard Stern returning for another season of America’s Got Talent (Bababooey!); and 3 kids joining the fatestants on the new season of The Biggest Loser (premiering January 6). 6.  HBO Love! With clips of the Beyonce Documentary (airs February 16); a year in review and a look ahead at all things, HBO and the first trailer for the new season of Girls!

1. Revolution – Sorry for missing the Day After Chat, it was in my calendar, but I didn’t get to watch this amazing installment until Wednesday night. Amazing, amazing, amazing. There isn’t much I can say. The look in their eyes when the helicopter rose up. The silence during Miles and Monroe’s swordfight. Aaron’s brilliance in figuring both how to get them in and that using car keys (? Who still has those?) to light the match so the bomb would work. Truly, truly amazing. I have one bone to pick and I think its actually with the network (and not because of this ridiculous four month hiatus, sniff), but with the promos. A good friend of mine who has grown quite addicted to Revolution thought that the show was returning in January because there was no mention of March after the finale, only when it returns in 2013. Come on, people, at least be honest with all the fans, not just the ones who read everything out there about television, but also the ones who only watch the shows.

2. NCIS – Another amazing show (sorry, am I using the word “amazing” too much). Excellent use of Alex Kingston and nice to see a little gleam of evil in her eye. Is Gibbs returning to the redhead thing? NCIS always draws you in, but this episode made me tear up and laugh out loud (several times, most having to do with Shmiel). No bones to pick here, just wanted to give credit where it was due. One question though. Where was Palmer?

3. Private Practice – Snore. Sorry, I’ll keep watching till it ends, but the stories are LAME!

4. Glee – There are so many things I could bring up here. Like the fact that Blaine seems to be able to go back and forth between schools without any regard for anything. I mean don’t his parents have to pay tuition or something. I can’t decide if I’ve been enjoying the episodes more without Kurt and Rachel or not. I don’t usually realize until the episode is over that they weren’t in it, and then I wonder about them. Marley is a moron. Really. We know that Brit is dumb and apparently so is Sam. But why did they make Marley dumb too. Obviously with a very large mother she has body image issues, but its not like her other clothes don’t fit, unless bitchy Kitty found a way into her closet. Can’t wait for the Kitty/Quinn confrontation. BTW, Patty Simcox was the perfect role for Kitty. But, here’s my real issue this week and once again in this Soundoff, its not the show, its the network. What was up with the X Factor overrun. Seriously? Two hours isn’t enough? They had to run over (and seriously run over. Football into Amazing Race into Good Wife overrun). Ugh. Now I either have to watch it On Demand and not be able to skip through the first half of the episode or I have to watch on the computer, not my favorite way to watch.

5. Cancellations – I haven’t watched a single episode of any of the shows that bit the bullet this season. But there are some silver linings. Mamie Gummer is free now. Will someone on the Good Wife please bring her back as Nancy Crozier, love her as Alicia’s foil in court.

2.  Show and Casting News!  Yesterday’s big news item was that CBS picked up an adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Under the Dome, straight to series with a 13 episode commitment, no pilot.  It follows the story of a town that is trapped under a giant see through dome and the craziness that seeps in.  Months after ordering the pilot, Nickelodeon formally greenlighted the joint iCarly and Victorious spinoff, Sam & Cat, for a 20 episode order. Tt’ll follow 2 characters originated on the previous shows, Jennette McCurdy (as Sam Puckett from iCarly) and Ariana Grande (Cat Valentine from Victorious).  Last, TVLine has some possible scoop on Chevy Chase’s exit from Community.

3.  Star Trek: The Next Generation. In its continuing preview of the Blue Ray disc set of TNG, EW.com has released a great deleted scene from a key episode in the show’s canon.

1.  TV Tonight! We begin our sad farewell tour with Last Resort tonight. Also, Scandal! And Person of Interest!

• CBS is all new tonight with The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men in the 8 o’clock hour, Person of Interest at 9 and Elementary at 10.
• NBC has 30 Rock (a Liz Lemon wedding!) , Up All Night, The Office and Parks and Rec between 8-10 and then Rock Bottom Center at 10.
• Fox has live results on X Factor at 8 and Glee (Thanksgiving episode?) at 9.
• ABC returns one of the final episodes of Last Resort (sad face) at 8, Grey’s Anatomy at 9 and Scandal at 10.
• The CW is all supernaturally with The Vampire Diaries at 8 and Beauty and the Beast at 9.
• On cable, USA Network has a new Burn Notice at 10; and Nat Geo returns new seasons of its shows Wicked Tuna at 8, followed by 2 episodes of Rocket City Rednecks; and then 2 episodes of American Chainsaw starting at 10.

2.  Show and Casting News! Another flat liner for Mamie Gummer as The CW cancels Emily Owens, M.D. (though it will show all 13 episodes instead of yanking it outright). Perhaps the gifted actress she should stop playing doctors?  In happier news (for someone), ABC has given additional back order scripts to each of Last Man Standing and freshman comedy, Malibu Country, the 2 shows that make up ABC’s reconstituted TGIF.  In a head scratcher of a career move, Donald Faison (Scrubs, The Exes) has been tapped to host a new game show on TBS,  Who Gets The Last Laugh?,  from Punk’d co-creators Jason Goldberg and Ashton Kutcher.  In “its about time” news, Fox has indicated that The Mob Doctor won’t get a back order and should finish its run (for good) in early January.
